GLUTEN FREE HUMMUS

Vegan friendly and gluten free hummus is packed with plant-based protein. It is perfectly paired with crudites (raw vegetables) or crackers. It is traditionally made with tahini (a sesame seed paste) but we have made it super budget friendly by leaving the tahini out.

The antioxidants found in olive oil (which is in hummus) is proven to fight inflammation as effectively as medicines. Inflammation is the body’s way of protecting itself again injury, illness, or infection. If inflammation persists over a long period of time, it can become chronic and this leads to serious health problems.

Hummus contains a lot of fibre which is fantastic for your digestive health. Studies have also shown that the fibre in chickpeas may promote the growth of healthy gut bacteria, which produce butyrate — a type of fatty acid that helps nourish cells in the gut and is linked to lowering the risks of colon cancer.

What’s more, hummus is naturally free of common food allergens, such as gluten, nuts and dairy, which means it can be enjoyed by most people.

Easy Peasy Hummus (serves 6)

Cost of ingredients in June 2020: Approximately R36 for a bowl full or R6 per person

Ingredients

  • 1 x 420g tin chickpeas, drained
  • 200 ml olive oil
  • 30ml garlic puree
  • a pinch or 2 of dried chilli flakes (depending on how spicy you like it) or cayenne pepper
  • 100ml lemon juice
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Method

Blits all ingredients in a Nutribullet until smooth and enjoy.
