Celebrating World Coffee Day: A Brew That Connects Us All

October 1 marks World Coffee Day, a celebration of the beloved beverage that fuels our mornings, brings us together, and has woven itself into the fabric of our daily lives. Whether you're a latte lover, an espresso enthusiast, or someone who can't start the day without a piping hot cup of black coffee, there's no denying that coffee holds a special place in our hearts and routines. But what makes coffee so important, and where did this global obsession begin?

Incidentally, Hirsch’s has the largest supply of coffee machines in South Africa and we would love to show you our range – and demonstrate some of the finer points of what makes them such an integral part of our kitchens – and our lives!

Before we expand on our range, here is a  Sip of Coffee History: Coffee's rich history dates back to the 15th century in the Arabian Peninsula, where it was first brewed in Yemen. Legend has it that a goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee when his goats became unusually energetic after eating berries from a certain tree. Intrigued, Kaldi brought the berries to a local monastery, where monks brewed the first batch of coffee and discovered its invigorating effects. By the 16th century, coffee had spread to Persia, Egypt, and the Ottoman Empire, eventually making its way to Europe, where it became a staple in social gatherings and intellectual discussions.

The coffeehouse culture that blossomed during this time created spaces where people could gather to exchange ideas, debate, and socialise—much like today’s cafés that serve as modern-day meeting spots for friends, colleagues, and thinkers alike.

More Than Just a Drink Coffee is more than just a way to wake up; it has a significant cultural and economic impact. In many countries, coffee is a key export, supporting millions of farmers and workers globally. The coffee trade has shaped economies, spurred technological advancements in brewing, and continues to inspire countless innovations, from cold brews to artisanal roasting techniques.

The DELONGHI ELETTA EXPLORE – Is and absolute winner, offering 50+ hot, cold and Cold Brew drinks. It also has the bean adapt technology that adjusts machine settings for each coffee type to ensure the ideal coffee extraction.

The PHILIPS SAECO AUTOMTIC EXPRESSO MACHINE – has five aroma strength settings – very handy if you have a family with mixed tastes when it comes to coffee! It can produce a whopping 15 different coffee varieties!

The SMEG Black Retro machine – has a built in coffee grinder and produces the true coffee flavour from freshly ground beans. Thanks to the pressure gauge, it is possible to check whether or not the coffee is being extracted at the correct pressure.

The NESPRESSO VERTUO CREATISTA COFFEE MACHINE – Gives you a wide choice of coffee styles, from espressos and lattes to iced coffees. Incidentally if you are concerned about the capsules causing environmental damage once discarded, the good news is that they are made from  85% recycled aluminium, a material that is infinitely recyclable.

So, why not treat yourself to the perfect cup today? Here’s to many more mornings made better with your favourite brew!
